What is SEO?
This is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a process of setting up your web site for organic search results of major search engines.
What do I mean by this? Why do you need to know this?
Let’s suggest you have a great web site. You want people to visit your web site as often as possible. For this reason your web site must be search-engine friendly. You need SEO to generate traffic to your web site.
What do you have to do to optimize your web site for search engine?
First of all, you have to select a topic for your web site. If you are considering creating a blog, the topic of the blog could be one of yours hobbies, such as football, fishing or photography. If you have an e-commerce web site, you supposedly know what you are going to sell. Your product is your topic.
Secondly, you have to think about your target audience. If you know your target audience, it will give you advantages for building an effective SEO.
The next step is a keyword generation.
There are two types of keywords:
- General keywords or head terms
- Specific keywords or tail terms
Let’s have a look at specific keywords. For example, if you have an e-commerce web site, specific keywords will describe your specific product or service. Tail terms (specific keywords) are usually two or three words in length and have lower search volume than head terms. Head terms (general keywords) combine from one to two words and have high search volume. For example, for angling web site the general (head terms) keywords are ‘Fishing’, ‘Fishing Tackle’, whiles the specific (tail terms) keywords are ‘Cheapest Coarse Fishing Tackle’, and ‘Best Fly Fishing Tackle’.
Your purpose is to generate a significant amount of combinations of head and tail terms to implement effective Search Engine Optimization strategy.
How to generate keywords? Are there any tools for this?
Yes, there are. One of the useful and free suggestion tools is the Wordtracker (Navigate to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com). If you type a word in Keyword window, for instance, tutorials and click the Hit Me button, you can get a list of related keywords. Also it will give you the estimated search volume for each keyword. The Wordtracker shows you not only combinations of potential keywords, but the number of searches.
Another tool is the Google AdWord Keyword Suggestion Tool. It is located at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. It is also free. When you enter words or phrases the Goolge Keyword Suggestion Tool generates keywords and display Advertiser Competition. Keywords with high search volume and a low competition rating can be very useful for your Search Engine Optimization.
