How to Create a Sitemap?

Today our topic is how to design a sitemap.  Do not confuse with XML Sitemap.

What is a sitemap?
Sitemap is a page of your website that outlines your entire website.  It has the same hierarchy of structure as your website.
For example, Adamson’s Photo Studio website has the following pages:

  • home
  • social gallery
  • corporate gallery
  • about us
  • contact us

In order, to build a sitemap for Adamson’s Photo Studio website, a webmaster has to:

  • create a new page
  • name it as a sitemap.html
  • place the list of pages (look above) onto sitemap.html
  • write a short description of every page below name of page
  • make a link between name of page and actual page, thus a user can go to desired page from sitemap page in one click

Do not forget to place categories and subcategories of each page on the sitemap.html, if such exist.

Why do you need a sitemap page?
There are a few benefits to have a sitemap page on your website:

  • visitors of your site are more likely to find what they are looking for and do not get lost within the website
  • crawling your sitemap page search engines can quickly find recently added or updated pages on your website

Hence, designing a sitemap is very beneficial for your website search engine optimization. Furthermore, a friendly-user interface will attract more visitors to your website.

You can generate your HTML sitemap using Free Online Sitemap Generator located at http://www.xml-sitemaps.com

Meta Tags Optimization

Today I am going to tell you about description meta tags and why they are important for search engine optimization.

What is meta tag?
It is a brief description of your web page content.

For example, you are an owner of a photography studio website.  On the first page of your website (home or index page) you introduce customers to your services such as portraiture, hair styling and wedding photography.  Thus your description meta tags will reflect the content of the page and probably a company’s name and location of your business.

S. Anderson Photography Studio, Greater Manchester, Wedding Photography, Portraiture, Hair Styling

It has to be descriptive but no more than 160 characters in length.

There are 5 golden rules for creating description meta tags:
1.    A description meta tag should be related to the page content
2.    It should be descriptive.  Do not use general description words such as Photography Page or Photo Studio Page
3.    Use suitable keywords for meta tags.  Once again you have to do keywords research using Google AdWords Keyword Tool and Wordtracker.
4.    Do not use the entire content of the page for the description meta tags
5.    Do not duplicate descriptive meta tags for every page

How to write meta tags?
An easy way to do this is to summarize the entire content of the page into a small paragraph.

Where to put description meta tags?
The description meta tags have to be placed within the <head> tag in your html document.
Description meta tags should be unique for every page of your website and related to its content.

Why do you need to optimize description meta tags?

Google and other search engines use description meta tags to find what a page is about.  Description meta tags might be used by search engines as a snippet for your page in a search result.

Thus it is in your interests to optimize description meta tags for organic search.  The better meta description tags optimized, the better performance in organic search result.

Some websites offer the use meta tag generator, which you can try for free.  One of them is SeoBook.com.  Click meta tag generator to go to SeoBook.com

Duplicate Content

To create a website for optimization search you have to avoid duplicate content.

What does it mean?

It means that content of your website should be unique.

If search engines discovered duplicated content, you may be penalized.  It could happen even if you are the original author.  Unfortunately, Google can not determine who stole whose content and your web site could be chosen to be excluded from all search engines results.  There is also another penalty option; to put your website in supplemental result.  Supplemental result is not part of the search engine indexing.  Thus both penalties are very bad for your SEO strategy.

How to avoid it?

First of all, how I pointed above, you have to write your own content.  Secondly, regularly check your web pages for duplicate content.

How to do this?

One of the most popular tools to check duplicate content is Copyscape (located at www.copyscape.com)

  1. Open Copyscape in your browser window
  2. Type the URL of your web site into Copyscape’s search box
  3. Click ‘Go’

In a few seconds the web sites with duplicate content will appear.
If you have found, that your content has been stolen, you have to without delay report the spam to the search engines.
Google spam report is at www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html
Yahoo spam report is at http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/search/spam_abuse.html
Bing web spam report is at https://support.discoverbing.com/eform.aspx?productKey=bingcontentremoval&ct=eformts

Submit reports of spam immediately.  To keep your web pages on the high level of search engine rank, check your web pages content on regular basis.

Optimizing Title Tags

The next step after research keywords is optimizing titles tags.  Search spiders read text within title tags to determine the content of a web page.  Thus it is very important to use right keywords for your web page title.

What are titles tags?  Where to find them?

First of all you have to get any text editor.  Notepad text editor comes with Windows operating system.  You can find it in the left low corner of your screen Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.  There is another free and good text editor, Crimson Editor.  You can download it from http://www.crimsoneditor.com/.
Before explaining further I would like to point out that we are exploring the option when your web page is written in HTML code.

To optimize title tags follow next steps:

  • When you open your home page in your favorite text editor, locate on the top of the page the <HEAD> tag.
  • Type the <TITLE> and </TITILE> tags somewhere between <HEAD> and </HEAD> tags.
  • Type the title of your page exactly between <TITLE> and </TITLE> tags.

For example, you have found with the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool that for your fishing website there are keywords such as Fishing Tackle, Cheapest Fishing Tackle and Online Fishing Tackle Store.  They have a fairly high search volume and a low rating in competition.
Type all these keywords separated by coma between <TITLE> and </TITLE> tags.  If you save the page and upload it to the web server, you will see the title at the top of your web browser.  This is a primary factor for Search Engines to rank your web page.  Keep in mind, that for every page of your website the title tags should be unique.  Repeatability of title tags across all pages will lead to a search engine penalty.  Also do not forget, that your title tags should be closely related to the page text or content.

How to start SEO

What is SEO?

This is an abbreviation for Search Engine OptimizationSEO is a process of setting up your web site for organic search results of major search engines.

What do I mean by this?  Why do you need to know this?

Let’s suggest you have a great web site. You want people to visit your web site as often as possible.  For this reason your web site must be search-engine friendly.  You need SEO to generate traffic to your web site.

What do you have to do to optimize your web site for search engine?

First of all, you have to select a topic for your web site.  If you are considering creating a blog, the topic of the blog could be one of yours hobbies, such as football, fishing or photography.  If you have an e-commerce web site, you supposedly know what you are going to sell.  Your product is your topic.

Secondly, you have to think about your target audience.  If you know your target audience, it will give you advantages for building an effective SEO.

The next step is a keyword generation.
There are two types of keywords:

  • General keywords or head terms
  • Specific keywords or tail terms

Let’s have a look at specific keywords.  For example, if you have an e-commerce web site, specific keywords will describe your specific product or service.  Tail terms (specific keywords) are usually two or three words in length and have lower search volume than head terms.  Head terms (general keywords) combine from one to two words and have high search volume.  For example, for angling web site the general (head terms) keywords are ‘Fishing’, ‘Fishing Tackle’, whiles the specific (tail terms) keywords are ‘Cheapest Coarse Fishing Tackle’, and ‘Best Fly Fishing Tackle’.

Your purpose is to generate a significant amount of combinations of head and tail terms to implement effective Search Engine Optimization strategy.

How to generate keywords?  Are there any tools for this?

Yes, there are.  One of the useful and free suggestion tools is the Wordtracker (Navigate to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com).  If you type a word in Keyword window, for instance, tutorials and click the Hit Me button, you can get a list of related keywords.  Also it will give you the estimated search volume for each keyword.  The Wordtracker shows you not only combinations of potential keywords, but the number of searches.

Another tool is the Google AdWord Keyword Suggestion Tool.  It is located at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.  It is also free.  When you enter words or phrases the Goolge Keyword Suggestion Tool generates keywords and display Advertiser Competition.  Keywords with high search volume and a low competition rating can be very useful for your Search Engine Optimization.
