How to improve page ranking?

A month ago Google page rankings of my blog dramatically dropped down.   I was terribly upset and did not know how to improve Google page rank.  So I did an investigation and found where the problem was.  And now I am going to tell you what to do, if it has happened to you too.

Reasons why this happens could be different:

  • Algorithmic updates
  • Some of the back links to your website were removed
  • Penalization and some other reasons

The best way to find what exactly happened to your website is to go to Google webmaster tools.  I suppose you have added your website to Google webmaster tools already.  If so log on to the Google webmaster tools and under Sites bar you will see site’s URL and its verification status.  It should be verified, if you added your website earlier.
Click on your site’s URL and Dashboard window will appear.  On the left side column you will see Dashboard heading and underneath

  • Site configuration
  • Your site on the web
  • Diagnostics

In the centre of the window underneath Dashboard word you can notice Top search queries on the left and Crawl errors on the right.  Investigate these errors.  It could help you to uncover some problem in your website structure.
For example, I had 50 NotFound crawl errors.  Clicking on the NotFound word I could find which exactly page was not found and when.
This gives you a good picture which pages Google was not able to crawl.  You also can figure out why they were not opened.  For example, 404 not found error tells that this page more likely does not exist.
Click on the plus next to

  • Site configuration
  • Your site on the web
  • Diagnostics

and go through all subheadings such as

  • Sitemaps
  • Crawler access and other

to learn how Google see your website and to diagnose potential problems.

In Site configuration section you will provide information about your website. Your site on the web shows what Google see about your site.  In Diagnostics section you can get reports on any problems when Google crawl your website.

Other things you have to consider for good Google page rankings are relevance and importance.  How relevant content of your web page, header and description meta tags?  How important is this content for users?

Your website ranking also depends on the links to your website.  Do not go mad for quantity of links, but keep attention on quality and relevance of the links.  The relevant links from other websites to yours can indicate quality and popularity of your website and improve Google page rank.

I strongly recommend in pursue to improve page ranking of your website, visit Google webmaster tools on regular basis and check all information related to your website.  It will help you to eliminate not only present problems, but to avoid any unexpected problems in the future.
